Importing Maps from Run.GPS Route Planner
This is the best way to get your maps into Run.GPS as long as you don't need a map with hiking trails. Run.GPS Route Planner (http://www.gps-sport.net
) is free to use for everyone. Here's a short description:
Preparation
You need an account from GPS-Sport.net
. Sign up with the service - it's free and you only have to provide a user ID, password and email address - that's it.
Recommendation: use Firefox for exporting maps - other browsers may cause problems.
Using the Route Planner
Sign in to the website and start the Route Planner by clicking the "Route Planner" button.
Scroll to the piece of map you want to export. You can use the "Find Location" function to directly get to place you want. You can also use the "Set as home" function (click on the map when you're on the start page) to set yourself a fixed starting position.
Once you have moved the map to the right position, click the "Start Map Export Wizard" button.
Step 1: configuring the export
Your browser should be switched to fullscreen mode. Why? Because we're making a screenshot of the map window and if we do not have fullscreen mode, there would be a border to the window.
Using Firefox or Internet Explorer on a PC, press F11 to switch to fullscreen.
Now you just have to provide a name for the map to export and select a map mode (map only or satellite only or combined).
Press the "Continue" button.
Step 2: making a screenshot
Now you should see only the map and nothing else on the screen. No scrollbars, no title bars, just nothing. If there are other elements on the screen, you will have to cut them out later on using a graphics program.
At this point, you can still move the map to change the section to export.
On a PC, hold the Alt key and then press the "Print" key to make a screenshot. The screenshot has been put to the clipboard.
Click somewhere on the map to continue to step 3 - but be careful not to move the map now since that would change the map's coordinates.
Step 3: saving the screenshot and XML descriptor file
Change back from fullscreen mode to normal mode by pressing F11.
Start Microsoft "Paint" or any other graphics program to save the screenshot. Hold the Ctrl key and press the V key to insert the clipboard content into the program.
Save the map image as file type "JPEG" and name the file '
.jpg', where is the title you have given the map before.
In addition to the actual image file, you will also need a descriptor file which exactly defines the map's extend. Download the XML map descriptor file and continue to step 4.
Step 4: copying the files
Now you have all you need, you simply have to connect the PDA to your PC and copy the two files '
.jpg' and '.xml' to the directory '/My documents/Run.GPS/map_images'.
