What you say is correct. If you want to use high resolution maps that are too big to be held in the main memory of your device - you need to make smaller pieces. One approach is what you describe using Map Calibrator. But if you use placemark coordinates for calibration, this will be probably inaccurate.

I think using Google Earth to just scroll about and make the slices yourself is still the faster and easier way. If the resolution is too high, just make the GE window smaller. You don't have to make *exakt* slices - it's okay if the slices overlap.

One idea for the future:

we might implement a map export wizard based on Yahoo Maps:
1) you select the source (Google Maps or Yahoo Maps) and the type (Sat, Street, Hybrid)
2) if Google is selected, continue as it is now
3) if Yahoo is selected, ask the user to select slices (1x1, 2x2, 3x3)
4) show all slices in the wizard (download slices by right-clicking; the XML position files are offered as links)

This would be a convenient way I think but we have to check first if the Yahoo Maps conditions of use allow that.

Google Earth importing problem

Hello,

After several failed attempts, following the instructions exactly brings a Google Earth image into Run.Gps. This works on the free version of Google Earth - 4.2.0198.2451. If your image covers a large area, detail is lacking; if you have a closeup image, then you lose coverage area.

The image limitations led me to try importing from Google Earth Pro (4.1.7) which offers higher resolution options when saving an image. However, a more detailed image creates a larger file that becomes too big for the mobile device (MOtoQ in my case). I had trouble with this version anyway as it allows you to select different image resolutions and Run.Gps does not seem to work using files from this version of GE. It is a bit moot since a single large file is the main problem, even if it did produce a good set of KMZ and JPG files.

So, what options does one have to bring in a large area, high resolution image? I'm thinking I can use Google Earth Plus/Pro to save a large detailed image then define 4 placemarks near the corners of the image and save those places in a KMZ. With the JPG and placemark coordinates MapCalbrator would be used to calibrate the image and create the sliced up image, ready for Run.GPS. I don't see any way to go directly from Google Earth or Route Planner to Run.GPS with a higher res image.
