My Samsung Galaxy S3 is reported to be receiving a Android 4.3 update REAL soon. I think this will include BT low energy 4.0. So I too am looking at getting new BT 4.0 monitors. Can you indicate which cadence monitors you are working on? MUCH better if it includes cadence + speed. I find speed from GPS too slow/laggy to be of any use on the bike.

Great :-)

I will wait when you will suport cadence and speed (i already have bluetooth HRM wich works with my phone) to test it inside with nexus7.

What do you recomend to buy?

Bluetooth Low Energy for Android

Yesterday we released Run.GPS Trainer UV 2.8.0 with Bluetooth Low Energy support.

__What is Bluetooth Low Energy?__

Bluetooth Low Energy = Bluetooth 4.0 = Bluetooth Smart = BLE

It is a technology that allows for Bluetooth connections that need very little energy. This makes it ideal for application such as heart rate monitors where you have a very small battery as energy source.

__What sensor types are supported?__

As for now, Run.GPS only supports heart rate monitors. Other sensors like cadence will follow.

__On which smartphone platforms can I use it?__

On Android (__4.3 or higher, you need hardware support for Bluetooth 4.0!__) and iOS (iPhone 4S or higher). Windows Phone 7/8 is not supported since there is no common API (Application Programming Interface) for BLE yet.

Some devices with BLE support:
* iPhone 4s
* iPhone 5
* iPhone 5s
* iPhone 5c
* Google Nexus 4
* Google Nexus 7
* Samsung Galaxy Note 3
* Devices with Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and Cyanogenmod 10.2 should be compatible too

__Which heart rate monitor do you recommend?__

We recommend Polar H7:

http://www.rungps.net/product/hrm008/Polar-H7-Heart-Rate-Sensor

__How to use it on Android__

1) Install release 2.8.0
2) Go to Main Menu >> Configuration >> Heart Rate Monitor
3) Wear your BLE heart rate monitor
4) Select "Bluetooth Low Energy" as heart rate monitor type
5) Select "search for BLE devices"
6) Choose your device
7) Connect

No problem, I use your software since 2007 and I like that you develop it all the time :-)

Winter is near, today it was already below zero outside and I am collecting ideas for indoor cycling :-)

Idea: what about connecting yours "Training simulator" with bike on tacx trainer via ant+ cadence sensor? so we could repeat our or others rides.. with simple formula 1 rotation is (depending on tyre) cca. 2m ...etc...

@rhobot: Yes right. Also, you don't need extra hardware for this. As far as I know, BLE hardware is also ANT+ capable if the OS supports it.

@Bosti: Right, but please give us some time to implement it. We'll start - as usual - with BLE heart rate monitor support and then add other sensors.

You can probably use the Nexus 7 along with an ANT USB stick and an OTG cable.

Also I wouldn't be too quick to write off ANT+ considering Samsung just announced their adding it to the Galaxy S4 and all future flagship phones.

So if I buy this: http://www.topeak.com/products/PanoBike/speed_cadence_sensor
install on bike (bike is on tacx), use Run.GPS on my Nexus 7 http://www.google.com/nexus/7/
I could do indoor training: start ->> do ride ->> stop & upload to portal?

Thnx,
Regards

No, sorry, the tacx trainers are not supported.

If you have an ANT+ compatible phone, you could add heart rate and bike cadence to your recording, but not speed.

The future is Bluetooth Low Energy. There will be support for various BLE sensors including heart rate, speed, cadence, so I'd wait for that.

(But you need Android 4.3 with Bluetooth 4.0 hardware for that.)

I have tacx basic trainer, I have run.gsp on my android phone; so what to do to use run.gps the same way like outside? Press start/ do the bike riding/ press stop and upload to portal. Is there a way to connect speeed sensor to tacx trainer and get data into run.gps? or perhaps other solution?

regards,
Bosti
