This may be possible, yes. But currently we're focussing on the OpenStreetMap, because it has already become more detailed for many areas than any other maps solution available (speaking of little hiking paths, cycle paths, ...)

Would it be in violation of the license if there was a free version of Run.GPS and another version with more functions for purchase? Both would use google maps. This way you aren't charging for the use of google maps because it is available in the free version. The cost of the purchase version is only to activate the added functions.

Hi Tom

Thanks for the answer.
You are correct in the matter of the API as Google does not allow usage of the API if you charge you customers for using it. I guess there are a lot of programs out there that are in violation of the licence.

It would be nice to have Google Maps in Run.GPS, but the absence of it is not a "dealbreaker" (for me anyway).

I agree that OpenStreetMap is getting better and better all the time. I have started to add missing data in my area and i encourage everybody else to do the same...:-)

Hi Krille

1. Unlikely because as far as I know Google does not sell licences. But we'll send an enquiry to Google.
2. It would still interfere with the licence (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/terms.html):

"The API may be used only for services that are generally accessible to consumers without charge. Accordingly, You may not use the API for any service that requires a subscription or other restricted access, or for which a fee is charged."
They sell this software, so it is not free.

"You may not use the Service with any products, systems, or applications installed or otherwise connected to or in communication with vehicles for or in connection with: (a) real time route guidance (including without limitation, turn-by-turn route guidance and other routing that is enabled through the use of a sensor); (b) any systems or functions for automatic or autonomous control of vehicle behavior; or (c) dispatch, fleet management or similar applications."

3. perhaps

So, accessing the map tiles through the API does not help, but we will contact Google.

The other services have similar restrictions in their Terms of Service.

I think OpenStreetMap.org is getting better and better ...

Best regards

Tom

There is numerous reasons that Tracky can use Google Maps, for instance:

1. The payed to use it by obtaining a licence.
2. They use it through the Google Maps API
3. They use it without a licence (unauthorized use)

The reason http://mgmaps.com wasn´t allowed to use Google Maps was because they "took" the raw map tiles directly without using Google Maps API.
Read more about this on the mgmaps forum: http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=923

Tom: i guess you cannot use the Google Maps API as that uses Javascript?

What about the "other" services; Yahoo maps or Microsoft Virtual Earth, any way to use any of those?

Interesting point ... we're going to investigate this. I still think it's illegal, but I'll check out the Google Maps licence again.

If there's any legal way to integrate Google Maps - WE'LL DO IT :-)

If it's true then how does this software called Tracky (similar to Run.GPS but not nearly as good) get away with it?
http://www.trackthisout.com/
It's a great feature to have if you could license it from Google!
Tom 10.12.2007 14:50:32 UTC

Yes for Google Maps, MS and Yahoo there's still only the offline way to get the maps imported ... we don't want to go to jail for Run.GPS :-)
jb3 08.12.2007 14:04:45 UTC

Right, google maps have been removed, but yahoo and MS maps are still usable with mgmaps.com. In the meantime you released 2.0.7 which apparently allows using OpenStreetMap.org. Great! But these maps are of course still way less detailed than yahoo or MS.
Tom 06.12.2007 16:09:57 UTC

This is not possible because the licence regulations do not allow for that. Google Maps has already been removed from the program you mentioned.
