I found similar behavior on my Motorola Droid X with Android 2.2. In my case the issue seems to be that Android 2.2 does not correctly show the Connect status. When I've paired successfully with my Zephyr (in my case the Zephyr HRM BT), I'm able to Connect through Run.GPS.Trainer.UV (and get correct Zephyr HR and accelerometer data) though Android setup still shows the status as "Paired but not connected".

Zephyr HxM Heart Rate Monitor and Andriod 2.2
Hello,
I have a Samusung Captivate that was running Andriod 2.1 and is now running Andriod 2.2. My Zephyr Hxm HRM has been able to pair with it with out issue on both OS versions. I recently updated a T Mobile My Touch 3G from Andriod 1.6 to 2.2, it will pair but not connect. Now I know the Bluetooth Serial did not work on Andriod 1.6, but now with my device upgraded to Andriod 2.2, I figured it should work just like my Samsung Captivate. I have also tried SportsTracker with the exact same results, so this is not just an issue with RunGPS.
Has anyone one got the Zephyr HxM Heart Rate Monitor to pair and connect to a device that was upgraded from Andriod 1.6 to Andriod 2.2??
